Wireless location update for cellular network

An apparatus for wireless communication at a network device, comprising:

• at least one memory;
• and
• at least one processor coupled to the at least one memory, the at least one processor configured:
• to transmit, to a user equipment (UE), an indication of whether to skip a registration and location update in response to the UE entering a new area;
• and
• to receive a location update in accordance with the indication.

A method of wireless communication at a user equipment (UE), comprising:

• receiving an indication of whether to skip a registration and location update in response to entering a new area;
• moving to the new area while in idle/inactive mode;
• skipping the registration and location update in the new area, in response to receiving the indication when the indication instructs the UE to skip the registration and location update;
• and
• transmitting, to a network entity, the registration and location update in the new area, in response to not receiving the indication or in response to the indication instructing the UE not to skip the registration and location update.
