Active secondary service set identifier client control

A method for providing active secondary service set identifier (SSID) client control, the method comprising:

• comparing, by a client control engine in an access point, a total on-channel utilization against a connection threshold when a client attempts to attach to a secondary SSID of the access point, wherein the total on-channel utilization includes utilization across a primary SSID and the secondary SSID;
• attaching, by the access point, the client to the secondary SSID when the total on-channel utilization is less than the connection threshold;
• monitoring, by a monitor engine of the client control engine, secondary SSID utilization with respect to the total on-channel utilization;
• checking, by a pre-mitigation engine of the client control engine, performance of a primary SSID client when the secondary SSID utilization exceeds or is equal to a defined percentage of the total on-channel utilization;
• and
• executing, by a mitigation engine of the client control engine, at least one of a client throttling or a client disassociation of at least one secondary SSID client when the performance of the primary SSID client is degraded.
