Assemblies, systems, and media for providing proof of play information for content items displayed at electronic display assemblies are provided. A unit controller electronically interposed between a media player and an electronic display generates redundancy check codes from the content items actually transmitted to the display, such that a consistent code recurs while a given content item continues to be displayed. When a consistent code is generated consecutively, a play count for that content item is incremented, and an uninterrupted run of consecutive consistent codes is counted as a single play. Play counts are maintained over time, and a duration of play is determined from the first and last times a consistent code is generated. The codes, play counts, durations, and compressed copies of the content items may be stored and reported to remote devices.
