Packet lake: novel network primitive for low latency volumetric streaming

A client device comprising:

• at least one memory storing computer program code;
• and
• at least one processor configured to execute the computer program code to cause the client device to
• determine a sub-queue priority based on a field of view of a user,
• transmit the sub-queue priority to an apparatus having a two-dimensional packet buffer including a plurality of priority sub-queues, each of the plurality of priority sub-queues including a plurality of volumetric video packets of a volumetric video,
• receive, from the apparatus, volumetric video packets from one or more of the plurality of priority sub-queues based on the sub-queue priority, and
• display a volumetric video based on the volumetric video packets.

A method for transmitting volumetric video, the method comprising:

• receiving a plurality of volumetric video packets of the volumetric video;
• storing the plurality of volumetric video packets in a two-dimensional packet buffer, the two dimensional packet buffer including a plurality of priority sub-queues;
• discarding a stored volumetric data packet from a randomly selected priority sub-queue, of the plurality of priority sub-queues, in response to
• receiving a further volumetric video packet, and
• the two-dimensional packet buffer being full;
• and
• transmitting a volumetric video packet from the two-dimensional packet buffer to a client device.
