Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for reducing latency in video streaming. At least a first portion of a live content item is encoded, using a first encoder, into a first bitstream, which is packaged into a first plurality of segments that start at a first time in the live content item. An offset is determined. At least a second portion of the live content item is encoded, using a second encoder, into a second bitstream, which is packaged into a second plurality of segments that start at a second time in the live content item, where the second time is based on the offset and is after the first time. Each segment of the first and second plurality of segments starts with an instantaneous decoder refresh frame, and each segment at a corresponding position in the first and second plurality of segments comprises a group of pictures.

Dependent claims

A method comprising:

encoding a content item into a first encoded bitstream and a second encoded bitstream;
segmenting the first encoded bitstream into a first plurality of segments;
segmenting the second encoded bitstream into a second plurality of segments, wherein segment boundaries of the first plurality of segments are temporally offset relative to segment boundaries of the second plurality of segments;
receiving a request from a client device to play the content item;
determining, based at least in part on the request, one of the first encoded bitstream or the second encoded bitstream;
and
providing, to the client device, the determined one of the first encoded bitstream or the second encoded bitstream for playback of the content item.

processing circuitry configured to:
encode a content item into a first encoded bitstream and a second encoded bitstream;
segment the first encoded bitstream into a first plurality of segments;
and
segment the second encoded bitstream into a second plurality of segments, wherein segment boundaries of the first plurality of segments are temporally offset relative to segment boundaries of the second plurality of segments;
input/output (110) circuitry configured to:
receive a request from a client device to play the content item;
and
the processing circuitry further configured to:
determine, based at least in part on the request, one of the first encoded bitstream or the second encoded bitstream;

provide, to the client device, the determined one of the first encoded bitstream or the second encoded bitstream for playback of the content item.
