Embodiments enable an efficient detection of online fraud such as fishing, among others. A relatively small client-side language model (LM) computes a compact message embedding characterizing a message received by the respective client device. The compact message embedding is transmitted to a security server, where it is inflated and fed to a large server-side LM. The size of the client- and server-side LMs may differ by orders of magnitude. The server-side LM is tasked with identifying fraudulent messages and/or determining various attributes of the respective message. Transmitting a message embedding to the server instead of the message itself ensures the privacy of the user. Meanwhile, using a relatively small LM makes it possible to perform LM-assisted feature extraction on a client device with modest computing resources, such as a mobile telephone.
A server computer system carrying out fraud detection activities on behalf of a plurality of client devices, the server computer system comprising at least one hardware processor configured to:
A method of detecting fraudulent messages using a server computer system connected to a plurality of client devices, the method comprising employing at least one hardware processor of the server computer system to:
A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by at least one hardware processor of a server computer system connected to a plurality of client devices, cause the computer system to:
