Abstract
An optical transmission system according to an example embodiment of the present disclosure includes a transmitter configured to generate an electrical signal, a laser diode configured to generate a source optical signal, a modulator configured to modulate the electrical signal into a target optical signal based on the source optical signal, and a variable optical attenuator (VOA) configured to apply an amplitude modulation (AM) tone to the target optical signal.
Claims11
An optical transmission system comprising:
- a transmitter configured to generate an electrical signal;
- a laser diode configured to generate a source optical signal;
- a modulator configured to modulate the electrical signal into a target optical signal based on the source optical signal;
- a variable optical attenuator (VOA) configured to apply an amplitude modulation (AM) tone to the target optical signal;
- an oscillator configured to generate an electrical signal with the AM tone;
- and
- a level controller configured to adjust the AM tone,
- wherein the level controller is further configured to identify a target modulation index (MI) and adjust the AM tone such that the target optical signal corresponds to the target MI, and
- the target MI is defined based on a difference between a maximum power and a minimum power of the target optical signal.
