Abstract
Methods and systems for mid-cycle desaturation during magnetic energy harvesting (MEH) are provided. Four different mid-cycle desaturation strategies can be employed, each of which generates multiple power transfer windows within an alternating current (AC) half-cycle. All four strategies enable much higher energy extraction compared to MEH without utilizing any of the four strategies.
Claims8
A method for mid-cycle desaturation of a magnetic energy harvesting (MEH) system, the method comprising:
- a) providing the MEH system comprising:
- a first magnetic coupling element comprising a first winding and a second winding, wherein the first winding is configured to receive magnetic flux from an alternating current (AC) source;
- a primary switching network electrically coupled to the second winding of the first magnetic coupling element, wherein the primary switching network is configured to control routing and polarity of a first induced current flowing from the second winding;
- a second magnetic coupling element comprising a third winding and a fourth winding, wherein the third winding is electrically coupled to the primary switching network to receive the controlled first induced current;
- and
- an output rectification network electrically coupled to the fourth winding of the second magnetic coupling element, wherein the output rectification network is configured to direct a second induced current from the fourth winding to supply power to a load;
- b) providing magnetic flux to the first magnetic coupling element from the AC source;
- and
- c) repeatedly and actively controlling the polarity of the first induced current via the primary switching network, thereby causing multiple magnetic desaturation of the second magnetic coupling element within one unit of a rectified AC cycle of the MEH system, and thereby providing multiple energy harvesting windows within the same one unit of the rectified AC cycle.
A magnetic energy harvesting (MEH) system configured for mid-cycle desaturation of the MEH system, the system comprising:
- a first magnetic coupling element comprising a first winding and a second winding, wherein the first winding is configured to receive magnetic flux from an alternating current (AC) source;
- a primary switching network electrically coupled to the second winding of the first magnetic coupling element, wherein the primary switching network is configured to control routing and polarity of a first induced current flowing from the second winding;
- a second magnetic coupling element comprising a third winding and a fourth winding, wherein the third winding is electrically coupled to the primary switching network to receive the controlled first induced current;
- and
- an output rectification network electrically coupled to the fourth winding of the second magnetic coupling element, wherein the output rectification network is configured to direct a second induced current from the fourth winding to supply power to a load,
- wherein the system is configured such that the controlled polarity of the first induced current via the primary switching network causes multiple magnetic desaturation of the second magnetic coupling element within one unit of a rectified AC cycle of the MEH system, and provides multiple energy harvesting windows within the same one unit of the rectified AC cycle.
