The present disclosure is directed to a method for preparing a metal-carbon nanofiber composite material (e.g., lead-carbon nanofiber composite material). The method comprises electrospinning two solutions, wherein the first solution comprises a source of metal (e.g., lead) and the second solution comprises a carbon nanofiber precursor. The resulting fibers are heated to melt the metal (e.g., lead) onto the carbon nanofiber precursor fibers and form an intermediate fiber material. The intermediate fiber material is subjected to carbonization to form the metal-carbon nanofiber composite material. The metal-carbon nanofiber composite material may be used as an anode for a lead acid battery or lithium-ion battery.
