An ion gate is provided for a mass spectrometer. A first electrode assembly comprises a plurality of guide electrodes arranged to define a multipole ion guide from a first end to a second end of the first electrode assembly. The ion guide is configured to receive an ion beam at the first end. The guide electrodes are configured to receive RF voltages to define a confinement volume for the ion beam. A second electrode assembly comprises at least one gating electrode that intersects a guide electrode, wherein the at least one gating electrode is positioned adjacent to the first electrode assembly, outside of the confinement volume; and between the first end and the second end of the first electrode assembly. The at least one gating electrode is configured to receive a DC voltage that is changeable between a passing DC voltage and a gating DC voltage.
