A smart cart system uses a vision language model (VLM) to identify items added to its storage area. The system captures sensor data from various sensors, such as load sensors and cameras, to detect actions like adding, removing, or shifting items. When an item is added, the system computes the item's load and filters candidate items from a database based on this load. The smart cart system uses video data and the VLM to identify the added item by generating scores for each candidate item. The system may use a coarse VLM for initial scoring and a finer VLM for detailed identification. Additionally, the system can fine-tune the VLM with training data generated from scanned machine-readable labels and corresponding video data, updating the VLM's parameters through a backpropagation process.
