Implementations disclosed herein are directed to adapting decoding of generative model (GM) based on a user's language proficiency for a given language with which the user is interacting with the GM. Processor(s) of a system can: receive user input that is in the given language; process, using the GM, at least the user input to generate generic GM output that is not adapted to the user's language proficiency for the given language; process the generic GM output to generate proficiency-specific GM output that is adapted to the user's language proficiency for the given language; determine, based on the proficiency-specific GM output, responsive content; and cause the responsive content to be rendered. In generating the proficiency-specific GM output, the processor(s) can utilize a proficiency-specific model and/or a proficiency score that is specific to the user for the given language.
