A system can encrypt data of a self-encrypting drive using a device encryption key, wherein the self-encrypting drive comprises a priority list of encryption ciphers, and wherein the device encryption key comprises a first key value. The system can, select a second encryption cipher from the priority list, generate a second key value based on the second encryption cipher, decrypt the data of the self-encrypting drive using the device encryption key, to produce read and decrypted data, update the device encryption key based on the second key value, to produce an updated device encryption key, and write the read and decrypted data to the self-encrypting drive, wherein the writing comprises encrypting the read and decrypted data using the updated device encryption key. The system can process reads and writes for the self-encrypting drive using the updated device encryption key.
