An early stopping checking and verification process includes deriving a workload lower bound and a workload upper bound on what-if cost for an index tuning curve for a workload as what-if calls are being made. The index tuning curve represents a function that maps a number of what-if calls allocated to a percentage improvement of a best index configuration found so far. Early stopping checks are performed to identify a predetermined characteristic of the index tuning curve to determine if early stopping verification should be performed. A difference between the workload lower bound and the workload upper bound is compared to a threshold when the predetermined characteristic is detected. What-if calls for the workload are terminated based at least in part on the comparison between the difference between the workload lower bound and the workload upper bound and the predefined threshold.
