Applications with variable, environment-dependent memory requirements may be unable to effectively optimize their own memory consumption using static thresholds or fixed limits, particularly when the application operates as a low-priority process in a shared computing environment. A dynamic operational memory footprint controller embedded within an application calibrates a floor operational memory footprint by applying controlled paging-out pressure through an operating system memory management API and incrementally adjusting until performance criteria are satisfied. During runtime, the controller collects process-level and system-level activity metrics, normalizes them relative to the calibrated range, and applies a machine learning model to generate candidate adjustments to the operational memory footprint limit of the application. The controller applies adjustments as soft memory pressure through the API, facilitating dynamic memory reduction without hard limits that may cause application instability.
