Coalesced Read Request Processing For Improved Storage Device Read Capacity Utilization

A method comprising:

• receiving a read request for data stored at a storage device of a plurality of storage devices, the read request associated with a data size;
• determining whether available read bandwidth of the storage device is greater than bandwidth required to service the data size associated with the read request;
• in response to determining that the available read bandwidth is greater than the bandwidth to service the data size associated with the read request, identifying one or more other read requests directed to the storage device based on an unused portion of the available read bandwidth of the storage device;
• and
• issuing a read operation that retrieves the data corresponding to the read request and additional data associated with the one or more other read requests.

A non-transitory computer readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed, cause a storage system controller to:

• receive a read request for data stored at a storage device of a plurality of storage devices, the read request associated with a data size;
• determine whether available read bandwidth of the storage device is greater than the bandwidth required to service the data size associated with the read request;
• in response to determining that the available read bandwidth is greater than the bandwidth to service the data size associated with the read request, identify one or more other read requests directed to the storage device based on an unused portion of the available read bandwidth of the storage device;
• and
• issue a read operation that retrieves the data corresponding to the read request and additional data associated with the one or more other read requests.
