A textile-based sensing system is disclosed that includes a textile substrate formed from interlaced semiconducting textile fibers and metal fibers. Intersections between the semiconducting textile fibers and the metal fibers define a plurality of non-ohmic junctions configured to generate electrical signals in response to mechanical stimuli applied to the textile substrate. The plurality of non-ohmic junctions collectively form a distributed textile sensor matrix. One or more processing devices receive electrical signals generated by the textile sensor matrix and process the signals using a trained model configured to compensate for variability arising from non-conformal contact between the textile substrate and a user. Based on analysis of spatiotemporal patterns in the electrical signals, the trained model classifies at least one of a user interaction or an object interaction. The classification is used to interface with an electromechanical system to cause interaction-dependent control.
