A Mach-Zehnder interferometer includes a first waveguide having a first plurality of phase shifting segments and a second waveguide coupled to the first waveguide by a input coupler at a first end of the second waveguide and an output coupler at a second end of the second waveguide opposite the first end and having a second plurality of phase shifting segments. To minimize effects of process and/or environmental variations on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer the first and second waveguides may be made tolerant to various process and/or environmental variations. A first phase shifting segment of the first waveguide and a first phase shifting segment of the segment may form a corresponding pair, wherein the first corresponding pair is configured to provide wavelength tolerance to wavelength shifts of an optical signal propagating through the first and second waveguides caused by a first parameter.
