A display assembly includes a first and second subassembly attached to a structural framework, at least one of which includes an electronic display layer and a cover positioned forward of the electronic display layer, and each of which includes an airflow passageway. A rear passageway between the subassemblies provides an open space extending along rear surfaces of the subassemblies and fluidly connecting the airflow passageways, together forming a closed airflow pathway for a circulating gas. A fan unit located in the rear passageway and associated with each subassembly moves the circulating gas from the rear passageway into the airflow passageway of the associated subassembly. The subassemblies may be mounted on opposing sides of the structural framework, and activation of the fan units may generate a relatively turbulent flow within the rear passageway and a relatively laminar flow within the airflow passageways.
