Abstract
Optical couplers enable communication to and/or from PIC (Photonic Integrated Circuit). The optical couplers are manufactured at wafer-scale and provide detachable coupling to an array of optical fibers. An angled reflector at the end of an optical channel enable vertical coupling to or from the PIC. The optical beam is expanded by a lens at the interface to increase alignment tolerance.
Claims20
A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) comprising:
- an optical channel extending in a first direction;
- a reflector at an end of the optical channel, the reflector having a surface that is angled relative to the first direction;
- and
- a lens over the reflector, wherein an optical path from the reflector to the lens is perpendicular to the first direction.
1 more element
A photonic integrated circuit (PIC) assembly comprising:
- a first layer comprising:
- a plurality of optical channels extending in a first direction;
- and
- a plurality of reflectors arranged at respective ends of the optical channels;
- and
- a lens array over the first layer, the lens array comprising a plurality of lenses arranged over corresponding ones of the plurality of reflectors.
3 more elements
An assembly comprising:
- an array of convex lenses arranged at an input to the assembly, wherein the convex lenses are arranged in at least two rows;
- and
- an array of optical fibers, wherein an input of one of the optical fibers is arranged at a focal point of one of the array of convex lenses.
