Abstract
Optical couplers enable communication to and/or from PIC (Photonic Integrated Circuit). The optical couplers are manufactured at wafer-scale and provide detachable coupling to an array of optical fibers. A pair of lenses or mirrors on two sides of the vertical coupler provide a self-locking mechanism, which can increase the alignment tolerance of the vertical coupler compared to prior solutions.

An assembly comprising:
- a bulk material having a cavity formed at one side of the bulk material;
- a curved mirror formed within the cavity, the curved mirror having a concave shape;
- and
- an optical fiber at least partially surrounded by the bulk material, the optical fiber having an input at the cavity and offset from the curved mirror.

An assembly comprising:
- an insulating material comprising a front side and a back side;
- a curved mirror formed at the front side of the insulating material, the curved mirror arranged to deflect an incoming beam away from the curved mirror and away from the front side of the insulating material;
- and
- an optical fiber at least partially surrounded by the insulating material, the optical fiber having an input at the front side of the insulating material and offset from the curved mirror.

An optical interconnect comprising:
- a transmitting assembly comprising:
- an optical channel extending in a first direction;
- a reflector at an end of the optical channel, the reflector having a surface that is angled relative to the first direction;
- and
- a first curved mirror;

- a receiving assembly comprising:
- a second curved mirror configured to reflect a beam from the reflector to the first curved mirror;
- and
- an optical fiber having an input arranged to receive a reflected beam from the first curved mirror.
