Abstract
Optical couplers enable communication to and/or from PIC (Photonic Integrated Circuit). The optical couplers are manufactured at wafer-scale and provide detachable coupling to an array of optical fibers. An array of curved mirrors reflect beams received from the PIC towards a corresponding array of optical fibers; the curved mirrors change the direction of the beams.
Claims20
An assembly comprising:
- a layer of a medium for transmitting optical signals;
- an array of curved mirrors over the layer, wherein one of the curved mirrors is configured to deflect a beam that travels through the layer;
- and
- an array of optical fibers over a portion of the layer, wherein each of the optical fibers has an input arranged to receive a deflected beam from a corresponding one of the curved mirrors.

An optical structure comprising:
- a glass layer having a first side and a second side opposite the first side;
- an array of curved mirrors along the second side of the glass layer, wherein one of the curved mirrors is configured to deflect a beam that travels in a first direction from the first side of the glass layer to the second side of the glass layer, the deflected beam directed in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction;
- and
- an array of grooved structures extending along a third direction perpendicular to the first direction and the second direction, each of the grooved structures corresponding to a respective one of the curved mirrors.
1 more element
An optical interconnect comprising:
- a transmitting assembly comprising:
- an optical channel extending in a first direction;
- a reflector at an end of the optical channel, the reflector having a surface that is angled relative to the first direction;
- and
- a lens over the reflector, wherein an optical path from the reflector to the lens is perpendicular to the first direction;
- and
- a receiving assembly comprising:
- a curved mirror configured to deflect a beam from the transmitting assembly;
- and
- an optical fiber having an input arranged to receive a deflected beam from the curved mirror, the optical fiber extending parallel to the first direction.
