In some embodiments, an inspection system includes an illumination apparatus configured to illuminate a component with polarized light. The illumination apparatus includes a light source and a polarizer. The inspection system also includes an image acquisition apparatus that includes an optical sensor and an analyzer. The optical sensor is configured to detect light reflected or scattered from the component. The analyzer may have a polarization axis oriented to limit polarized light reflected from the component via specular reflection. The inspection system may also include a controller in communication with the optical sensor, the controller configured to: receive optical data indicative of non-polarized light reflected or scattered from the component from the optical sensor; and identify at least one defect on the component based on the optical data.
