Abstract
Methods and kits employing a colorimetric test wherein the presence of beryllium is indicated by a visible color change that is quantifiable by comparison or color analysis. Advantageously, when the dye containing substrate contacts beryllium, the color change occurs almost instantly, allowing for rapid, near-real-time detection of beryllium without the use of complex instrumentation.

A method for manufacturing a kit for rapidly detecting beryllium, the method comprising:
- saturating a substrate with a dye solution comprising at least one of Chrome Azurol S (CAS) and/or Eriochrome Cyanine R (ECR) to form a saturated substrate;
- and
- drying the saturated substrate to form a dried saturated substrate,
- wherein, when the dried saturated substrate is exposed to an aqueous solution, a visible color change is observable within 1 minute due to the presence of the dye solution on a condition that a beryllium concentration in the aqueous solution is above 0.002 microgram.
A method for rapidly detecting beryllium, the method comprising:
- accessing a substrate saturated with a dye solution comprising at least one of Chrome Azurol S (CAS) or Eriochrome Cyanine R (ECR) and dried to form a dried saturated substrate;
- exposing the dried saturated substrate to an aqueous solution via one of:
- exposing the dried saturated substrate to dry particles and then wetting the dried saturated substrate and the dry particles with water, an acid solution, or a ammonium bifluoride solution, or
- wetting the dried saturated substrate with a solution and then wiping dry particles with the wetted saturated substrate, or wetting the dried saturated substrate with the aqueous solution;
- and
- observing a visible color change within 1 minute due to the presence of the dye solution on a condition that a beryllium concentration in the aqueous solution is above 0.002 microgram.
A kit for rapidly detecting beryllium, the kit comprising:
- a test strip, the test strip being saturated with a dye solution comprising at least one of Chrome Azurol S (CAS) or Eriochrome Cyanine R (ECR) prior to drying, the test strip being configured to develop a visible color change within 1 minute when exposed to a beryllium concentration greater than 0.002 micrograms.
