Exhaust fumes can be used to identify mechanical issues within vehicles, including autonomous vehicles. A monitoring system receives, from a sensor mounted on an external surface of an autonomous vehicle, data associated with a physical condition of the autonomous vehicle. The monitoring system identifies one or more characteristics of the physical condition based on the data. The one or more characteristics are indicative of a function of the autonomous vehicle. The monitoring system determines, based on the one or more characteristics, one or more actions for the autonomous vehicle. The monitoring system transmits the one or more characteristics to a central computing system associated with a fleet of autonomous vehicles, where the fleet of autonomous vehicles includes at least the autonomous vehicle.
