Aspects of the disclosure provide a method of characterizing an optical fiber, the method including: generating a coordinate point representation of an image comprising a cross-section of the optical fiber, the coordinate point representation comprising a series of edge points; determining, based on the series of edge points, a circular primary structure within the generated coordinate point representation; generating a first best-fit rounded shape corresponding to a series of inner edge points and a second best-fit rounded shape corresponding to a series of outer edges points of the circular primary structure; for each respective detected circular sub-structure, generating a series of subsequent best-fit rounded shapes corresponding to inner edge points and outer edge points of the respective detected circular sub-structure; and calculating a structural property of the optical fiber based on at least one of the generated first best-fit rounded shape, second best-fit rounded shape, and subsequent best-fit rounded shapes.
