A gaseous leak detection system includes at least one spectrometer configured to measure a first intensity of light from a light source and generate a leak detection data feed. The at least one spectrometer is emplaced at a leak detection location, a laser heterodyne radiometer (LHR), which is configured to measure an absorption lineshape of light from the light source and generate a background data feed. The LHR is emplaced at a background detection location. A computing device is configured to analyze the leak detection data feed and the background data feed to detect the presence of a gas leak. In embodiments, the spectrometer includes at least one of a diffraction grating, an echelle grating in a Littrow configuration, a photodiode and a wavelength scanning element. In embodiments, the photodiode is an indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) photodiode array.
