Abstract
A shaped charged electro-explosive (SCe) Device includes an initiator in direct and intimate contact with an exposed portion of the main charge. In different configurations, the packaged initiator, initiation charge or initiation circuit (acting over a gap) are in direct and intimate contact with the main charge. The SCe device may be manufactured by connecting a packaged initiator to an opening in the shaped charge housing through which a portion of the main charge is exposed or by forming the packaged or unpackaged initiator or initiator circuit in situ in a receptacle coupled to the housing around the opening.
Claims24
A shaped charged electro-explosive (SCe) Device, comprising:
- a shape charge (SC) including a housing oriented along an axis, a main charge formed in the housing and compressed to form a cone whose apex lies along the axis and a conically-shaped metal liner in direct contact with the surface of the main charge,
- an opening in the housing that exposes a portion of the main charge on the axis below the apex of the cone,
- an initiator in direct and intimate contact with the exposed portion of the main charge through the opening,
- wherein the initiator is responsive to an electric stimulus to detonate the main charge to form a detonation wave that collapses the conically-shaped metal liner and projects forward a shaped charge jet.
A method of assembling a shaped charge electro-explosive (SCe) device, the method comprising:
- providing a shape charge (SC) in which a main charge is formed in a housing and compressed to form a cone whose apex lies on an axis and a conically-shaped metal liner is in direct contact with the surface of the main charge, said housing having an opening on the axis that exposes a portion of the main charge below the apex of the cone;
- and
- placing an initiator in direct and intimate contact with the exposed portion of the main charge through the opening, wherein the initiator is responsive to an electric stimulus to detonate the main charge to form a detonation wave that collapses the conically-shaped metal liner and projects forward a shaped charge jet.
