A disconnecting differential assembly includes a housing configured to rotate about a first axis, a gearset having first and second side gears configured to transmit rotary power between the housing and the side gears, a first clutch element coupled to the first side gear for rotation therewith, a sleeve having an arcuate tongue, a second clutch element coupled to the sleeve and confronts the first clutch element, the sleeve and second clutch element can move between a first position where the clutch elements are spaced apart to rotationally decouple the first side gear from the sleeve permitting relative rotation therebetween, and a second position where the clutch elements are engaged to rotationally couple the first side gear and the sleeve, and a force plate configured to capture the coupling feature wherein bi-directional axial movement of the force plate moves the sleeve and second clutch element between first and second positions.
