Laundry machine and corresponding control system

A laundry machine operable to dry fabric-based articles comprising:

• a tub;
• a drum disposed within the tub and operable to receive the fabric-based articles;
• a sensor operable to measure a temperature within an internal region of the tub that is adjacent to the drum;
• and
• a controller programmed to,
• receive a measured temperature of the internal region from the sensor,
• estimate a moisture mass within the fabric-based articles over a time period corresponding to a drying cycle based on correlating the measured temperature of the internal region with a model of a total load mass of the fabric-based articles, wherein the total load mass is a sum of the moisture mass and a mass of the fabric-based articles, and
• in response to the estimated moisture mass within the fabric-based articles decreasing to less than a threshold based on the model, terminate the drying cycle.

A laundry machine controller programmed to:

• receive primary signals representative of a measured temperature of a sump region of the laundry machine during a drying cycle;
• estimate a moisture mass within clothing articles over a time period corresponding to the drying cycle based on correlating the primary signals with a model of a total load mass of the clothing articles, wherein the total load mass corresponds to a sum of the moisture mass and a mass of the clothing articles;
• and
• in response to the estimated moisture mass within the clothing articles decreasing to less than a threshold at a specified time based on the model, generate a secondary signal to terminate the drying cycle at the specified time.
