Devices and methods are provided for controlled nucleation and growth of materials in electrochemical environments. The technology utilizes conductive seed materials positioned on or near electrodes to act as nucleation centers for electrochemically generated growth species. By applying pulsed electrical stimulation in the presence of suitable chemical precursors, material formation is initiated at the seed sites and can propagate via self-propagating nucleation, where newly formed material structures serve as additional nucleation centers. This approach enables precise control over material morphology, crystal orientation, porosity, surface area, and dimensional characteristics while improving growth rates and energy efficiency relative to conventional electrochemical synthesis methods. The systems and methods are scalable across various reactor configurations and material types, including carbon-based materials derived from environmentally beneficial feedstocks such as carbon dioxide.
