Abstract
A medical device that is at least partially formed of a metal alloy that includes rhenium; and wherein 0.5-100% of the rhenium in the metal alloy is formed of radioactive isotopes of rhenium.
Claims20
A metal alloy that forms a portion or all of a medical device;
- said metal alloy includes at least 5 awt.% rhenium and one or more alloying metals selected from the group consisting of aluminum, boron, beryllium, bismuth, cadmium, calcium, carbon, cerium, chromium, cobalt, copper, gallium, gold, hafnium, iridium, iron, lanthanum, lithium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum and wherein said molybdenum includes 0-100% radioactive molybdenum isotopes, nickel, niobium, osmium, palladium, platinum, rare earth metals, rhodium, ruthenium, scandium, silver, silicon, tantalum, technetium, tin, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, yttrium, zinc, and zirconium;
- a combined weight percent of rhenium and alloying metals is at least 90 wt.% of said metal alloy;
- said rhenium in said metal alloy includes 0.5-100% radioactive rhenium isotopes.
A medical device that is at least partially formed of a metal alloy;
- said metal alloy includes at least 5 awt.% rhenium and one or more alloying metals selected from the group consisting of aluminum, boron, beryllium, bismuth, cadmium, calcium, carbon, cerium, chromium, cobalt, copper, gallium, gold, hafnium, iridium, iron, lanthanum, lithium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum and wherein said molybdenum includes 0-100% radioactive molybdenum isotopes, nickel, niobium, osmium, palladium, platinum, rare earth metals, rhodium, ruthenium, scandium, silver, silicon, tantalum, technetium, tin, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, yttrium, zinc, and zirconium;
- a combined weight percent of rhenium and alloying metals is at least 90 wt.% of said metal alloy;
- said rhenium in said metal alloy includes 0.5-100% radioactive rhenium isotopes.
A method for applying localized radiation to a treatment area in a patient comprising:
- a. providing a medical device:
- medical device that is at least partially formed of a metal alloy;
- said metal alloy includes at least 5 awt.% rhenium and one or more alloying metals selected from the group consisting of aluminum, boron, beryllium, bismuth, cadmium, calcium, carbon, cerium, chromium, cobalt, copper, gallium, gold, hafnium, iridium, iron, lanthanum, lithium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum and wherein said molybdenum includes 0-100% radioactive molybdenum isotopes, nickel, niobium, osmium, palladium, platinum, rare earth metals, rhodium, ruthenium, scandium, silver, silicon, tantalum, technetium, tin, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, yttrium, zinc, and zirconium;
- a combined weight percent of rhenium and alloying metals is at least 90 wt.% of said metal alloy;
- said rhenium in said metal alloy includes 0.5-100% radioactive rhenium isotopes;
- b. implanting said medical device in a patient;
- and
- wherein said radioactive rhenium isotopes from said metal alloy that at least partially forms said medical device cause localized radiation at said treatment site to a) facilitate in treatment of cancer that is located at or near said implanted medical device when implanted at said treatment site, and/or b) facilitate in treatment of cancer and/or the prevention of redevelopment of cancer at or near a location that cancerous cells currently exist and/or were removed from the patient at or near said treatment site.
