Drilling mud and method of making drilling mud having an unrefined petroleum product

Abstract

Drilling muds and methods of manufacture are described herein. The drilling mud may comprise a continuous phase being a blend of at least two unrefined petroleum products including a first unrefined petroleum product and a second unrefined petroleum product. A dispersed phase may be dispersed throughout the continuous phase. The first unrefined petroleum product and second unrefined petroleum product may have API gravities in a range of 28 to 45, and the continuous phase may have an API gravity in a range of 32 to 42. The drilling mud may be made by blending a first unrefined petroleum product and a second unrefined petroleum product to achieve a target continuous phase API gravity, and dispersing a dispersed phase throughout the continuous phase. One or more drilling mud additives may be blended into the continuous phase to form a drilling mud.
