Compositions and methods for reducing odors emitted from petroleum-based products and bituminous materials, such as asphalt, are disclosed. In embodiments, compositions include a coffee component, a vanilla component, and a carrier, optionally further including an additive such as a scavenger compound, plant essential oil, glycerin, silicone, or wax. In one embodiment, coffee essential oil and vanilla essential oil are combined in a 3:1 ratio and diluted with a fatty acid alkyl ester carrier, such as soy methyl ester. The compositions provide at least one of a positive change in hedonic tone and a reduction in odor intensity when added to a petroleum-based product or bituminous material. The compositions also reduce emissions of odor-causing agents, including general hydrocarbons, mercaptans, and hydrogen sulfide. Methods of making and using the odor-reducing compositions, including addition to hot mixed asphalt during preparation, are also provided.
