Substituted fluorene moiety containing diamine monomers, polyimides comprising such diamine monomers and processes of making and using such diamine monomers and polyimides are disclosed. Such polyimides are fully imidized. Such polymers needed not be processed at high temperatures, yet they can survive high temperatures. Materials, such as coatings, that employ the disclosed polyimides can be applied at low temperatures using less-toxic solvents, yet such coatings can survive high temperatures. Such polyimides can be used in applications such as a resin for preparation of polymer matrix composite, a binder or adhesive for joint multiple components and a binder or a resin component for a coating. Furthermore, the such polyimide-based coating or composite can be used as a thermal insulation layer and/or electrical insulation layer for electronic packaging. Finally, as the disclosed polyimides are highly soluble, they can easily be recycled and/or reconfigured
