A method for producing polymers and copolymers from alpha-hydroxycarbonyl compounds and their dimers, the method comprises a condensation polymerization at least in part under reduced pressure in the presence of a Lewis acid catalysis wherein either no solvent is used or a variable and decreasing amount of solvent is present during the polymerization reaction. A polymeric product resulting from such a method with weight average molecular weight (Mw) equal to or greater than 15,000 Dalton, preferably in excess of 20,000 Dalton, more preferably in excess of 25,000 Dalton and most preferably in excess of 30,000 Dalton. A polymeric product resulting from such a method which exhibits T95 of 165° C. or higher. Films and molded objects prepared from the polymeric products. Methods for making films and molded objects employing the polymeric products.
A method of producing polymers and copolymers from alpha-hydroxycarbonyl compounds and their dimers, the method comprising a condensation polymerization conducted in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst substantially without solvent for at least a portion of the reaction time.
A method of producing polymers and copolymers from one or more glycolaldehyde dimers, the method comprising a condensation polymerization of the one or more glycolaldehyde dimers conducted in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst at a temperature ranging from 50° C. to 110° C.;
