A method for directly synthesizing nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) electrode materials from black mass, includes steps of: leaching the black mass with a hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent to extract critical metals, including lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese, and generate a pregnant hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent, adding a precipitant to the pregnant hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent to precipitate salts of the NMC electrode materials from a lithium-enriched hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent, adjusting metal ratios of nickel, manganese and cobalt in the precipitated salts of the NMC electrode materials to a target metal ratio for cathode synthesis to generate a precursor formulation and synthesizing a target cathode material from the precursor formulation.
