A method for controlling a motor vehicle in at least semiautomated operation, the method comprising steps of:
- automatically recording surroundings data with at least one first surroundings sensor and one second surroundings sensor, which operate independently of one another and according to different functional principles, the surroundings data characterizing the respective surroundings of the motor vehicle;
- for a region of the surroundings that is relevant for an upcoming automated driving decision for a planned driving maneuver of the motor vehicle:
- performing automatic object recognition, based on surroundings data from the first surroundings sensor, to recognize other road users relevant for the driving decision, and
- performing automatic area recognition, based on surroundings data from the second surroundings sensor, to recognize the relevant region as a free drivable area;
- and
- automatically making the driving decision dependent on whether the object recognition and the area recognition supply results are consistent with one another;
- wherein when the object recognition and the area recognition supply results are consistent with one another, the motor vehicle is controlled in an automated manner according to the planned driving maneuver and otherwise a specified safety measure is executed to avoid a collision with another road user possibly present in the relevant region.
