A method for maintaining a communication link between a control unit and lighting devices in a motor vehicle, wherein the motor vehicle includes the lighting devices and the control unit, wherein control commands generated by the control unit for controlling the lighting devices are transmitted from the control unit to the lighting devices by way of a vehicle bus, wherein the control device and each of the lighting devices are connected by way of a separate data line, wherein, in the event of a defect in the vehicle bus, the control commands and/or fault control commands generated by the control device for controlling the lighting devices are transmitted to the respective lighting device via at least one of the data lines.
