A headrest for a vehicle seat includes adjustable rods guided in a headrest guide assembly. A sensor system integrated in the guide assembly detects the vertical position of the headrest rods and generates a corresponding electronic signal. An evaluation device processes the signal and compares the detected position with an optimal target position derived from an individual user profile, which is created from an interior camera detecting occupant stature or from manual input. If a safety-relevant deviation between the actual and target positions is detected, the system issues an optical and/or acoustic alert to prompt correction. The system further detects complete removal of the headrest and provides a corresponding critical alert to enhance occupant safety.
