Smart regenerative braking method and apparatus

A regenerative braking apparatus comprising:

• a powertrain including a drive motor;
• and
• a controller configured to:
• determine a maximum required distance from a preceding vehicle based on a speed of a subject vehicle and a distance control parameter and based on satisfying a distance control parameter update condition during inter-vehicle distance control driving;
• update the distance control parameter based on the maximum required distance and a relative distance with respect to the preceding vehicle;
• determine a target distance from the preceding vehicle based on the distance control parameter;
• and
• control the powertrain based on the target distance.

A vehicle comprising:

• a powertrain including a drive motor;
• and
• a controller configured to:
• determine a maximum required distance from a preceding vehicle based on a speed of the vehicle and a distance control parameter and based on satisfying a distance control parameter update condition during inter-vehicle distance control driving,
• update the distance control parameter based on the maximum required distance and a relative distance with respect to the preceding vehicle,
• determine a target distance from the preceding vehicle based on the distance control parameter, and
• control the powertrain based on the target distance.
