An optical security component may include a first layer, a first diffractive structure etched into the first layer, a second reflective layer partially covering the first diffractive structure. The first diffractive structure may include a set of optical elements adjacent to each other. Each optical element may have a maximum dimension of less than about 300 μm and include a microstructure modulated by a sub-wavelength diffraction grating. Each microstructure may deflect an incident light beam and be substantially invariant by azimuthal rotation by an angle of less than 90° about a first axis. The diffraction grating may be substantially invariant by azimuthal rotation by an angle of less than 90° about a second axis substantially coincident with the first axis and produce a colored effect after the second layer has been deposited.
