Abstract
Bio-based compostable films including a combination of one or more polylatic acid (PLA) polymers and one or more amorphous polyhydroxyalkonate (aPHA) polymers are provided. The compostable films provide desirable breathability, strength, and/or hydrohead. Hygiene and healthcare articles including the compostable films are also provided.
Claims20
A compostable film, comprising:
- at least a first layer comprising (i) a polymer component comprising (a) one or more polylatic acid (PLA) polymers, and (b) one or more amorphous polyhydroxyalkonate (aPHA) polymers;
- and optionally (ii) an additive component;
- wherein the first film layer has water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of at least about 500 MOCON (g/m2/24 hours) per INDA IST 70.4 (08);
- and
- wherein the polymer component and/or the first layer has a bio-based carbon content from 75 to 100% by weight per ASTM D6866.
2 more elements
A method of forming a compostable film, comprising:
- (A) forming a polymeric melt composition comprising (i) a polymer component comprising (a) one or more polylatic acid (PLA) polymers, and (b) one or more polyhydroxyalkonate (aPHA) polymers;
- and optionally (ii) an additive component;
- (B) forming at least a first film layer from the polymeric melt composition, such as by a cast film process or a blown film process.
