Abstract
Use of low-cost, non-melt titanium hydride powder in a powder metallurgy consolidation process is described. Combining this titanium hydride raw material directly into a hot isostatic press canister for combined dehydriding and outgassing results in a highly efficient route for manufacture of small to large scale net shape products with properties equivalent to (or better than) traditional titanium forgings. Combining, mixing and/or blending the raw material with other elements and/or additives provides innovative compositions and components.
Claims20
A method of hot isostatic pressing, comprising:
- providing a canister;
- filling a powder composition into the canister, wherein the powder composition comprises a metallic hydride powder;
- evacuating the canister comprising dehydriding the metallic hydride powder and degassing the powder composition and an interior of the canister;
- hot isostatic pressing the powder composition in the canister to produce a component;
- and
- separating the component from the canister.
A composition of matter for hot isostatic pressing, comprising:
- a metallic hydride powder;
- and
- a plurality of enhancement phase particulates comprising at least one of oxides, nitrides, borides, and carbides.
A hot isostatic pressed component, comprising:
- a metallic matrix comprising at least one of titanium, niobium, tantalum and zirconium;
- and
- a plurality of enhancement phase particulates comprising at least one of oxides, nitrides, borides, and carbides.
