Abstract
Embodiments described herein generally relate to a new class of CO2-capturing compositions and to processes for making such compositions. In an embodiment, a CO2-capturing composition includes an amino acid and a three-dimensional graphene. Embodiments described herein also generally relate to processes for CO2 absorption and CO2 desorption using the CO2-capturing compositions. In an embodiment, a process for capturing CO2 from a gas or gaseous stream is provided that includes introducing a CO2-containing gas or CO2-containing gaseous stream with a CO2-capturing composition.
Claims20
A CO2-capturing composition, comprising:
- an amino acid;
- and
- a three-dimensional graphene (3DG).
A process for forming a CO2-capturing composition, the process comprising:
- heating a mixture comprising an unfunctionalized three-dimensional graphene (3DG) and an acid to form an acid-treated 3DG;
- reacting the acid-treated 3DG with a nitrogen-containing molecule to form a nitrogen-doped 3DG comprising a basic nitrogen-containing functional group;
- and
- sonically or ultrasonically treating a mixture comprising an amino acid and the nitrogen-doped 3DG to form the CO2-capturing composition.
A process for capturing CO2 from a gas or gaseous stream, the process comprising:
- introducing a CO2-containing gas or CO2-containing gaseous stream with a CO2-capturing composition comprising:
- an amino acid;
- a three-dimensional graphene (3DG);
- and
- optionally water.
A process, comprising:
- contacting a CO2-containing gas or CO2-containing gaseous stream with a CO2-capturing composition comprising an amino acid and a three-dimensional graphene (3DG) in an absorption unit to form a CO2-capturing composition having a first concentration of CO2;
- heating at least a portion of the CO2-capturing composition having the first concentration of CO2 in a desorption unit;
- and
- separating CO2 from the CO2-capturing composition having the first concentration of CO2 to form a CO2-capturing composition having a second concentration of CO2 that is lower than the first concentration of CO2.
