Catalytic reactor and system for purification of carbon dioxide streams and methods of using the same

Abstract

A process for the purification of carbon dioxide streams, the process comprising a) providing a gaseous stream including carbon dioxide and oxygen, where the gaseous stream includes less than 30,000 ppmv oxygen; b) introducing a hydrocarbon fuel to the gaseous stream to thereby form a fuel-containing gaseous mixture; c) oxidizing at least a portion of the hydrocarbon fuel within the fuel-containing gaseous mixture in the presence of a catalyst and the absence of flame to thereby provide an oxygen-reduced gaseous stream, where the oxygen-reduced gaseous stream includes less than 1000 ppmv oxygen; d) introducing hydrogen or a hydrogen intermediary to the oxygen-reduced gaseous stream to thereby form a hydrogen-containing gaseous mixture; and e) oxidizing at least a portion of the hydrogen within the hydrogen-containing gaseous mixture in the presence of a catalyst to thereby substantially consume all oxygen within the hydrogen-containing gaseous stream and provide an oxygen-purified carbon dioxide stream.
