Abstract
A printed security-enhanced document, printing method, and system for ensuring that any printing defects present in the variable indicia also occur in the background on the document protected. By ensuring that random printing defects in the variable indicia also appear in the same document's background, detection of the printing defects becomes more readily apparent.
Claims7
A method of manufacturing a lottery ticket, said method comprising:
- determining variable indicia for a first area of a substrate of the lottery ticket, the substrate having opposing side edges, the variable indicia comprising component colors selected from different first, second, third, and fourth component colors, the variable indica including first variable indicium comprising the first component color but not including the second component color;
- determining a background for a second area of the substrate, the second area of the substrate being adjacent to the first area of the substrate, the second area of the substrate being outside of a border of the first area of the substrate, the background comprising:
- the first component color, and
- the second component color such that the second component color is not present in the first variable indicium,
- wherein the second component color is different than the first component color, and
- wherein the first component color and the second component color are selected to form background artwork on the second area of the substrate;
- instructing a printer to print the variable indicia on the first area of the substrate and instructing the printer to print the background on a second area of the substrate, wherein due to a continuous printing error by the printer, the printer does not print the second component color in the first area and such that the continuous printing error extends also in a straight line parallel to the side edges of the substrate into the background on the second area of the substrate and does not affect the first variable indicium;
- forming a scratch-off coating covering the variable indicia;
- and
- automatically detecting the printing error in the visible display background that indicates the printing error in the variable indicia under the scratch-off coating, and thus that the lottery ticket is defective.

A method of manufacturing a lottery ticket, said method comprising:
- determining variable indicia for a first area of a substrate of the lottery ticket, the substrate having opposing side edges, the variable indicia comprising first variable indicium and second variable indicium that each comprise a first component color, a second component color, and a third component color wherein the first, second, and third component colors are different, and that each do not comprise a fourth component color that is different than each of the first, second, and third component colors;
- determining a display background for a second area of the substrate, the second area of the substrate being outside of a border of the first area of the substrate, the display background comprising:
- each of the first, second, and third component colors, and
- the fourth component color such that the first, second, and third component colors and the fourth component color are selected to form background artwork in the second area;
- instructing a printer to print the variable indicia on the first area of the substrate and instructing the printer to print the display background on the second area of the substrate, and wherein due to a continuous printing error by the printer, the printer does not print the fourth component color, and wherein the printing error extends from the variable indicia into the display background and does not affect the first variable indicium and the second variable indicium;
- applying a scratch-off coating to the variable indicia;
- and
- automatically detecting the printing error in the visible display background that indicates the printing error in the variable indicia under the scratch-off coating, and thus that the lottery ticket is defective.
