An implantable pulse generator (IPG) is configured to provide respiratory conditioning for a patient via phrenic nerve stimulation. At least one processor is configured to determine that a patient is in a non-sleep time period and enter a patient control operational mode that provides one or more respiration conditioning sessions. Each respective respiration conditioning session corresponds to a pre-programmed conditioning stimulation profile specifying stimulation parameters for the respective respiration conditioning session. The processor is also configured to enter a sleep operational mode, the sleep operational mode having one or more sleep treatment sessions corresponding to a pre-programmed sleep stimulation profile, and control delivery of the electrical stimulation to the phrenic nerve according to at least one profile to modulate patient respiration during the sleep operational mode, based on a patient therapy mode indicator comprising an atrial fibrillation therapy indicator.
