Methods and systems for modulating sleep-wake levels of a subject are provided. The methods include applying electrical stimulation to a location in a ventral capsule region, an orbitofrontal cortex region, or a subgenual cingulate region of the subject using an electrode in a manner effective to modulate sleep-wake levels of the subject. In addition, methods of treating sleep-wake disorders, such as hypersomnia and insomnia are provided. Both open-loop and closed-loop therapy approaches are provided for treatment of sleep-wake disorders. Closed-loop therapy is performed with a neurostimulator that records brain electrical signals from neural activity associated with wakefulness or sleepiness and delivers electrical stimulation when pre-specified patterns of neural activity associated with wakefulness or sleepiness are detected. Methods of monitoring and evaluating the effects of electrical stimulation on sleep-wake levels are also provided.
A method of modulating sleep-wake levels in a subject, the method comprising applying electrical stimulation to a location in a ventral capsule (VC) region, an orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) region, or a subgenual cingulate (SGC) region of the subject using an electrode in a manner effective to modulate sleep-wake levels of the subject.
A closed-loop method for treating hypersomnia in a subject, the method comprising:
A closed-loop method for treating insomnia in a subject, the method comprising:
A system for modulating sleep-wake levels in a subject, the system comprising:
A closed-loop method for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder or major depressive disorder in a subject, the method comprising:
