Abstract
The present technology provides systems and methods for delivering electrical stimulation having relatively long pulse widths to treat patient neuropathies, including diabetic neuropathy. For example, some embodiments include delivering a therapy signal having individual pulses with pulse widths of between about 5 milliseconds and 2 seconds. The therapy signals may restore sensation lost in association with the diabetic neuropathy and/or reduce pain or other abnormal sensations associated with the diabetic neuropathy.
Claims43
A method of treating a patient having diabetic neuropathy, the method comprising:
- programming a signal generator to deliver an electrical signal having a pulse width in a pulse width range of from about 5 milliseconds to about 2 seconds to the patient's spinal cord region via an implantable signal delivery device,
- wherein the electrical signal restores sensation lost in association with the diabetic neuropathy, reduces patient pain associated with the diabetic neuropathy, and/or reduces abnormal patient sensations associated with the diabetic neuropathy.
A patient treatment system for treating diabetic neuropathy, the system comprising:
- an implantable signal delivery device postionable proximate a patient's spinal cord region;
- and
- a signal generator having a controller programmed with instructions that, when executed, cause the signal generator to:
- deliver an electrical signal to the patient's spinal cord region via the implantable signal delivery device,
- wherein the electrical signal has a pulse width in a pulse width range of from about 5 milliseconds to about 2 seconds, and
- wherein the electrical signal restores sensation lost in association with the diabetic neuropathy, reduces patient pain associated with the diabetic neuropathy, and/or reduces abnormal patient sensations associated with the diabetic neuropathy.
A method of treating diabetic neuropathy in a patient, the method comprising:
- delivering an electrical signal to the patient's spinal cord region via an implanted signal delivery device,
- wherein the electrical signal has a pulse width in a pulse width range of from about 5 milliseconds to about 2 seconds, and
- wherein the electrical signal restores sensation lost in association with the diabetic neuropathy, reduces patient pain associated with the diabetic neuropathy, and/or reduces abnormal patient sensations associated with the diabetic neuropathy.
A method of treating a patient having peripheral neuropathy, the method comprising:
- programming a signal generator to deliver an electrical signal having a pulse width in a pulse width range of from about 5 milliseconds to about 2 seconds to the patient's spinal cord region via an implantable signal delivery device,
- wherein the electrical signal restores sensation lost in association with the peripheral neuropathy.
